the 2,010 project

365 days and one goal - to unveil the ultimate meaning of life. Ambitious task, I know, but as every day passes, I will scribble myself closer to the true definition of our existence as we know it. In 2010, I pledge to encounter 2,010 people with a simple task - write me one sentence on...what else? Life.

Day Five.

“Life is a grindstone. Whether it grinds us down or polishes us up depends on us.”

Thomas L. Holdcroft

Our work is often thought to define us. What we’ve spent our lives laboring on slowly becomes who we are as a person. But as we work through our lives, we must be careful to not let the influence of our efforts become the epitome of our existence.

Day Four.

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

Oscar Wilde

Life isn’t presence. Unveiling this definition is mind-altering. We aren’t called to merely exist. To go through the days with pattern or complacency. We are called to walk with purpose, to care with passion, to hope with no end, to put a vital enthusiasm in every moment of our existence. We are called to LIVE.

Day Three.

Ever encountered a telemarketer? What about a street evangelist? Or maybe you’ve come into contact with someone passing out promotional flyers?

So easily, we tend to overlook the people we see on the streets or our caller id. But when we pass over the pitches and handouts, we neglect to take a second glance at the person behind the promotion.

Today was met with much difficulty and plenty of disappointment as our life poll struck only two people. This transported me into the shoes of those I’d often passed by without a care. Sometimes, you don’t appreciate the work of others until you work at it yourself.

Today I learned to value the effort of the overlooked. The ones who accept denial daily and face the world bravely to advocate something they believe in. They are fighters.

Today was an experience. Life is too. The great Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”

So let’s reach to stand in the shoes of others. To share our experiences, and to, in turn, share our lives.

Day Two.

“Each day is a new life. Seize it. Live it.”

David Guy Powers

Think of it this way: Life isn’t a collection. Life is now. Each moment we experience is a new life in and of itself.

Day One.

What is meant by “life”? Is it meant to define our habits-what, day in and day out, we tend to do or say? Or is it a definition of who we truly are?

For today, I think “life” in Marcus Aurelius’ words:

“Your life is what your thoughts make it.”
